Observations:

May 10th, 2024

I managed to obtain a lot of information about teacher-student interaction, the language level of both the teacher and the students, the rhythm of the classes and their needs. The first class (13.04) was quiet, unlike the second (13.02) where the teacher took some time to calm them down. However, the way she did it was quite interesting, she joined the students' conversation in a very relaxed interaction (like a friend) and directed the topic towards the content and the class. This scenario allows us to conclude that the teacher has a very strong involvement with her students. This may have been easier because the teacher is young and is aware of the "memes". But this bond is extremely important in the classroom, especially in language classes, learning occurs through a lot of emotional influence. Well, going back to the first class, the teacher gave an activity where there was a good concentration of students, but less than half of the class finished before the class ended. What wasn't the same in the second group, even though the students didn't seem to be concentrating, a good part of the class performed the exercise in a short time. The language levels of both classes are not the highest, but the teacher seems to be very fluent. After quickly finishing the activity of the students in the second group, everyone was idle because the teacher had only planned this one activity, which warns me not to plan a lesson that is too short. And, to conclude my observations on that first day, I realized that the teacher, using a doubt from a student in the second class, managed to get the entire class to focus on the activity, so it is important to listen and interact with the class, thus winning them over. if your respect.

Talking with the teacher

Between the two classes and the end of the second class on the first day, I spoke with the teacher and had an expansion of my vision about her methodology and the situation at the school. She told me that she previously worked in the private sector and that it was a shock when she arrived at the school and saw the low level of student learning. She used more elaborate activities, tried dynamic methods and a more progressive approach, but the students still got very low grades in her assessments, which caused her to drastically lower her level. And then she told me something that scared me, the school has a 100% approval policy. It doesn't matter if the student learned or not, he needs to pass. The teacher had to pull a lot of activity out of nowhere to get the students to get a grade. This is very discouraging and reminded me of the concept of essence and appearance that we worked on in Modern and Contemporary with teacher Rejane, on the outside the school is one of the most "exemplary" in the state network with a very low failure rate, but on the inside the students They do not know basic concepts in any of the areas of knowledge. For Paulo Freire, an educational institution serves to teach the student how to read the world and intervene positively in it, provide critical thinking and develop the student's potential, and not simply give a high school certificate and throw them into the job market. And what leaves me most unmotivated is the fact that this is propagated in countless institutions in the state network.

On this second day of observation I saw that there are classes at the school with a fairly good language level. The first class was not so full and was mostly male with just 3 girls, which made it a very resilient class, not to mention it was a 3 year class. But to compensate, the class was more involved with English, perhaps due to the fact that they were already in their final year and already had a lot of contact, but the teacher managed to have a long conversation in English with one of the students. In the second class it was not very different, the students performed well in the target language, despite the teacher making an effort to get the students' attention.

At the end of my observations I realized that I will need to create material that is as dynamic as possible, with a lot of interactions and dynamics.

  1. I´d recommend explain and analyse the contend and development of the lesson. Analyse the lesson. The students´ understanding, the teacher´s goals and language perspective.
